Is Okinawa Safe?

  • Advice

Okinawa is always a place of interest for foreigners who are interested in moving to Japan. The American Military base is located in Okinawa, which has contributed to the high population of foreigners on the islands. However, the presence of the base may also cause some worries about safety. In this article, we will go over what it is like living in Okinawa with special attention to safety concerns.

About property in Okinawa

First of all, when you rent a house in Okinawa you will have to pay a variety of fees much like anywhere else in Japan. This will likely include a deposit (likely non-refundable), key money, and other necessary fees such as fire insurance.

The deposit is a type of insurance used for costs to cover any potential damages during your stay, as well as for cleaning when you move out. Some properties in Okinawa may not charge a key fee, or will offer a lower deposit, but you can expect to pay at least 2 months rent worth in move-in fees.

In recent years, Omoro and Makabi in Naha city have attracted people from all over Japan and the rest of the world.

About Omoro

This town used to be used as military reservation. After the restoration of the military base, land readjustment was carried out, and in the present, many houses and working facilities remain. You can find a traditional Okinawan village, as well as a large botanical garden that is free to enter. The botanical garden houses over 400 species of plants in addition to 110 orchid species! Aside from the nature, Omoro is well developed and modern, providing you comfort and all of your necessities in your daily life on the island. One of these features is the monorails that are very useful for commuting and taking you to where you need to go. Living here would be a breeze for families and workers alike!

About Makabi

This district is situated next to Omoro. Recently, the number of apartments and condominiums have increased due to land readjustment. In this area, you can find a spacious central park, perfect for taking your kids or pet to. There is also an abundance of delicious restaurants and interesting to stores to eat and shop at. Additionally, this city is cheaper than Omoro in regards to rent.

Is Okinawa Safe to Buy a House?

You might worry about safety in Okinawa due to the fact that you’ve seen bad news on TV and in newspapers. However, the isolated events you may have seen are no reason to completely rule out living in Okinawa. Many Japanese residents themselves travel to Okinawa to enjoy the beaches and tropical weather. Students from high schools around the country also take school trips, making it safe for children as well.

Unfortunately, some people think that American bases contribute to the decreasing Okinawan safety. However, the crime rate of Americans living in Okinawa is less than half of that of Japanese residents. In fact, there are many American marines who do volunteer work in Okinawa, such as environmental work, mentoring youth, and construction work. Therefore, it is safe to say that the presence of the American Military base is no threat to your daily life. In fact, you may find it pleasing to see other foreigners around!

Aside from the topic of the base, living in Okinawa requires you to be extremely aware of the potential natural disasters that may occur every year. Most typhoons in Japan usually pass through Okinawa every year, leaving residents with a rough season of wind and rain in the late summer. Additionally, there are potential storm damages in Okinawa that come along with the rainy weather. However, you do not need to worry about it too much, as in the case that water and electricity are cut off by a typhoon, Okinawan workers are quick to restore the problem back to normal.

In conclusion, American bases still are in Okinawa, but you do not need to worry about it when considering purchasing property. If anything, the weather is more of a problem than the military presence. Regardless of either factor, we can assure you that you won't find it difficult to enjoy Okinawan life!
