Because the Greater Tokyo are has the biggest real estate market in Japan, information or research focused on other prefectures is not as circulated. Although people are drawn to Tokyo’s life, a countryside escape can prove to be a quieter and different means of indulging in Japan.  

Each region has its own unique and interesting culture that are worth the experience. Some of the more popular prefectures to live in outside of Tokyo include Osaka, Kanagawa, Kyoto, and Hyogo.

Not surprisingly, most of Japan’s top 15 prefectures are located either in the Greater Tokyo Area* or Kansai (western part of Japan) known for their big cities where many people reside.

If you look at the places appear at the bottom of the table, you see places located in north, such as Akita, Aomori and Fukushima.

In actuality, these rural prefectures have low average prices that reflect the prefectures’ poor public transportation system.
