Tokyo’s Latest Landmark, Shibuya Scramble Square Opens

Shibuya SkyTokyu Corp., JR East, and Tokyo Subway (Tokyo Metro) jointly opened the Shibuya Scramble Square building on November 1st. The new high rise facility which is directly connected to Shibuya Station, stands at 47 stories high (with an additional 7 basement floors) and 230 meters tall, making it the tallest building in the Shibuya area. The rooftop observation deck, which showcases spectacular views of Tokyo Tower, Mt. Fuji, and the famous Shibuya Crossing Intersection, is the largest of its kind in Japan and is a new landmark for the area.

Shibuya SkyThe observation facility, called “Shibuya Sky”, includes a rooftop observation deck and a cafe bar on the 46th floor with panoramic views of the city. Most of the units in the building are reserved for office space, with around 210 spaces reserved for retails stores and restaurants.

Noriaki Takahide, President of Shibuya Scramble Square, the operating company, said at the opening ceremony, “I want everybody to feel the new allure of Shibuya.” In line with the redevelopment, Tokyu Corp.and the Urban Revitalization Organization also opened a new underground plaza at the East exit of Shibuya Station on the same day. The new plaza area is about 1,600 square meters, and the “Upright Cafe” in the plaza will broadcast tourist information about Shibuya.
