This February, officials in Nakano Ward, will be holding an open event for developers interested in repurposing the site of the aging Nakano Sun Plaza building. Developers must have plans to demolish and build a new structure on the site, specifically a mixed-use hotel, to include a concert hall and convention center. Nakano Sun Plaza was built in 1973 and currently acts as a hotel and concert hall with a capacity of around 2,000 people.

Proposals will be accepted until July and the chosen developer will be awarded the contract from the ward in October. Nakano officials would like the new facility to have a maximum capacity of 7,000 - 10,000 people. Full redevelopment and opening are expected sometime in 2024. Nakano’s mayor, Naoto Sakai, added, “I hope the new operator will choose to keep the Sun Plaza name.”
