Living in Shimokitazawa: What is it Like for Foreigners?

Shimokitazawa is what is called a bohemian neighborhood, situated not far from Shibuya and Shinjuku. Artists studio, kinky cafes and vintage clothes shops are what the neighborhood is filled with. 

Despite the fact that Shimokitazawa is a sought-after area, prices are fortunately cheap as the neighborhood is far enough from Central Tokyo. Located in the Setagaya District in Tokyo “Shimokita” is famous for welcoming independent retailers, cafes, theatres, and bars. This is an area which has long been famous for live music venues and stage theatres. So whether you are into art, shopping, history or just looking for a thought-after area to hang out, Shimokita is your place! 

This neighborhood feels like a trip back to the 1990s with hipster coffee shops and old vintage clothing shops. The atmosphere of the area, as well as the present vibes, are giving Shimokita a nostalgic impression. This area did not only keep the retro vibe, it was also part of History, by surviving to the American soldiers' occupation during WWII. Then hippies started coming into this area in the 1970s, transforming the place into the paradise it is today.

If you end up living in this area, lucky you. Hidden very well in Shimokita, you will find numerous clothing shops at very cheap prices. Shimokitazawa is, actually, a very sought-after area but far enough from central Tokyo to have cheaper prices. 

This place is unique in the capital. Exploring the city by walking is one of the best activities you can do in Shimokita, where you can discover hidden places and vintage stores. But be careful, being a relaxed district means that most shops and cafes only open at 11:00 a.m. or after. 

Theaters are also famous in Shimokita, allowing you to watch movies from successful writers and directors. Furthermore, eating is not a problem in Shimokita because the place is full of fancy cafes which are just waiting for you. Iconic pastries from movies such as Studio Ghibli's creations.

You will be welcome by Hayao Miyazaki’s cousin herself and will have the opportunity to taste one of that Totoro choux with seasonal flavours. And don’t forget to bring some cookies back home!

Honda Gekijo Theater

By coming here you will be able to watch movies from successful writers and directors but be quick, places are easily taken! This is situated near the South exit of the station, so you can not miss it.

By living in this locality, you will be able to fully enjoy the retro vibes that of the area. Plus, living not far from Shibuya and Shinjuku is convenient, so that adults, families, and students can go basically everywhere in Tokyo. 

Shimokita is perfect for people looking for adventure, just exploring the city by foot is a great activity for everybody. It is also recommended to come to this city during the Tengu-matsuri Festival or the Mikoshi-matsuri Festival, both should be experienced as they are local events.
