Harajuku’s New Train Station Opening in March

Harajuku Station has received a much-needed facelift in the build-up to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The nearly 100-year-old former wooden station, which is the gateway to Tokyo’s youth fashion district, failed to meet modern safety and fire standards. The new station, which has been revealed by the East Japan Railway Company, is slated to open to the public in March officially.

The interior of the station, as well as the ticketing gates, have all been enlarged to allow for more comfort and ease of travel in and out of the station. Expanded pathways and large glass windows that let in natural lighting are also needed enhancements that were added to the new station. Harajuku station is one of the busiest stations in Tokyo, with an estimated daily passenger volume of 80,000 as of last count in 2013.

Nearby popular attractions for Harajuku are the Takeshita Shopping Street, Omotesando and Meiji-jingu shrine. To read more about why tourists and residents alike love Harajuku, click here.
