Kyoto City
Kyoto, Japan by Pedro Szekely is licensed under CC BY 2.0
The capital of Kyoto Prefecture, Kyoto City was once the capital of Japan and thus both the seat of political power and the epicenter of Japanese culture. Despite the capital moving east to the city of Edo, now better known as Tokyo, the remnants of Kyoto’s long history as the capital remain to this day. Countless shrines and temples, palace grounds, a castle and more are scattered throughout the city, making it a place where history has a powerful physical presence.
Far from living in the past, however, Kyoto is a modern international city with a diverse population, convenient infrastructure, and all the benefits of city life, without as much crowding as some bigger Japanese cities. This makes it a very attractive place to live for locals and foreigners alike.
