Phuket Basic Information
Located in the Andaman Sea, Phuket is the biggest island in southern Thailand, and is known for being one of the most beautiful resorts in the country. The island is called “Pearl of the Andaman Sea,” which describes the emerald ocean and white beach. Phuket is named after the Malaysian word “Bukit” meaning hill. As you can imagine, 77% of the island is made up of mountains. There are 32 islands around Phuket. Sarasin Bridge connects the mainland and Phuket. When it was famous for the tin mining and exporting, Prodigies and Chinese people came to the island. The old city in Phuket is the trace of the days. Phuket is 1 hour and 20 minutes by plane from Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) or Don Mueang International Airport in Bangkok. The area of Phuket is 576km2 which is about 80% of Singapore, and the population is about 38,000.
Phuket Overview
Tin mining used to be the biggest industry to support the island’s economy. In 1980, the price of tin plummeted, and the tin mining industry declined. Tin excavation is now avoided to protect coral reef and beaches. Other than tin mining, agriculture was also one of the main industries in Phuket. Rubber, coconut, cashew nut, pineapple, and banana were mainly grown. However, a lot of agricultural lands and paddy fields wound up in a landfill due to the construction of residences and infrastructures.
In the present day, since Thailand is the biggest prawn exporting country, prawn farming is popular in Phuket. The tourism industry is also supporting the island’s economy. Phuket is known by the world as a resort, over 3 million people visit the island every year. With the increasing number of visitors, money earned from the tourism industry are used on the development of infrastructure, Although, promoting development while protecting the nature of Phuket is considered an important subject to be addressed.

As stated above, Phuket is popular as a resort island, and a lot of people around the world visit the island to play golf and marine sports. As far as investing in real estate, the closer the property is to the beach, the higher the price tag. Recently, many affluent Thai and Chinese people are purchasing high-end condominiums along the beach, especially in Kamala. Also, infrastructure development such as a new international airport terminal, underpass to eliminate congestion, a subway, are underway.
