Is it Possible for Me to Have a Pet in Japanese Condominium?

  • Advice

Like all condominiums, it is always important to consider whether a pet is allowed or not. Japan can be a little more strict when it comes to pets, making your search for the perfect living place for you and your pet a bit more difficult. However, it is not impossible to find a condo that allows you to own a pet. In the condominiums that do allow pets, there are some rules that must be followed.

Rules

1. If you use the elevator or stairs with your pet, you have to hold your pet in your arms, as your pet may leave footprint marks on the common area floor. In addition, there are some people who do not like being with pets in a closed place like elevator, therefore, you must keep your pet near you  in your arms at all times.

2. If you want to have a pet in a condominium, you must lay carpet to dampen the sound of your pet’s footsteps. Noise problems usually lead to troubles between residents. By laying carpet, the sound does not reach the lower floor. Furthermore, it is easy for pets' claws and nails to damage wood floors. Nowadays, there are carpets that can deodorize and prevent stain caused by tracks. In regards to rental units, some companies add expenses of restoration per month. In this case, it is important to consider this expense in your overall cost of living per month.

What animals can I have?

Some apartments may ban all types of pets in general. Some buildings may ban only larger pets such as dogs or cats, but allow smaller pets such as hamsters, fish, reptiles, or birds. It is important to check with each building for their specific rules in order to make sure you can bring your pet.
