New Facility by Kengo Kuma to Test Feasibility of CLT Structures

Mitsubishi Estate constructed a new facility in Tokyo's Chuo Ward to test the feasibility of Cross-Laminated Timber, or CLT. CLT is a wood panel product made from gluing layers of solid-sawn lumber together. The facility, named CLT Park Harumi, was built with support from Google Japan. Construction at the 3,369 square meter site was completed on November 29, and it opened on December 14. Mitsubishi Estate is conducting a study on utilizing CLT for high-rise buildings in the future.

CLT Park Harumi was designed by Kengo Kuma Architect & Associates, who also helmed the design and construction of the New National Stadium. The facility is currently located in the Harumi area, but it will be relocated to National Park Hiruzen in the winter of 2020 and be used as a center for art, culture and tourism.

This isn't Mitsubishi Estate's first time using CLT. The material was previously used to build rental apartments in Sendai City in March of this year, along with an airport terminal in Okinawa and office buildings in Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward.
